Preparation and Methods for Grain Size Measurements

A comprehensive guide to grain size distributions.

By analyzing the grain structure of metallographic samples, we can make accurate predictions about their mechanical properties. Smaller grain size means that the metal is less prone to plastic flow, while larger grains cause the metal to become more ductile. Larger grains will cause a decrease in both tensile and yield strength, and increase the metal’s percent elongation. Grain size, and therefore mechanical properties, can be altered by different forms of heat treating. With the Structure Expert Grain Module, we can quickly and easily measure the average grain size of a prepared metallographic sample. With this knowledge, we can ensure the quality of any heat-treated metals, and we can make heat treatment processes more economically and resource efficient.

Topics covered in this webinar include:

  • Discussion of why grain size is evaluated, and the relationship between grain size and mechanical properties
  • Presentation of heat treatment techniques and their effects on grain size
  • Differences in grain size evaluation methods according to ASTM/ISO standards
  • Demonstration of metallographic preparation case studies for different materials
  • Application of grain measurement methods and reporting using the Structure Expert Grain Module
